A number of the canine world’s most visually striking members can also present significant challenges to inexperienced and first-time dog owners. Dalmatians, for example, may be associated with firehouses and a number of animated Disney films, but they are also regarded as one of the most easily distracted breeds. Training a Dalmatian requires extreme patience and an ability to engage a restless puppy over the course of numerous, relatively short training sessions. The Siberian husky is another attractive dog that should only be raised by owners who have space for the dog to roam and a schedule that provides room for ample exercise. More importantly, if Siberian huskies are not given a task, they may develop destructive tendencies.
Perhaps most surprisingly, the Bassett hound ranks among the absolute hardest dog breeds to train. Often characterized as a sleepy, inactive breed in popular culture, such as Tex Avery’s Droopy, Bassett hounds are similar to Dalmatians in their penchant for wandering off during training sessions. The Bassett hound possesses an extremely sensitive nose, and without proper guidance it will pursue any scent that seems interesting. Owners must provide time for the dog to explore with its nose both before and after training.
