When a car hits a dog, the owner's first duty is to keep the animal as comfortable and safe as possible. Injured animals are typically frightened and in pain, which can make them act out. For this reason, many owners choose to muzzle the dog or otherwise keep it from biting, although this is only safe if the animal is breathing well. If the dog has any apparent bleeding wounds, the owner can cover these with a clean cloth and apply light pressure.
To combat shock, an owner can carefully wrap the dog in a blanket. If the dog may possibly have broken bones, veterinarians recommend that first aid providers move the dog as little as possible and attempt to keep him or her on a hard surface. Often a board will work. Experts recommend that the dog receive veterinary attention as soon as possible. Safe transport to a medical facility typically includes as little lifting and movement as possible, as the dog may have internal or orthopedic injuries.
